As we look forward to
potential FDA rulemaking for uniform front-of-pack labeling
in the coming year, a key question is how FDA will handle
sugars (both added and naturally-occurring) when there is no
Daily Value for sugars or method to enforce the distinction
between the two types. |
Nutrient Content Claims on Food

Instructional Series
Part 4 of 10
This month's installment in
our ten-part series describes the use of nutrient content
claims on food labels. This 10-part instructional series is
based on a 2009 publication titled "Silliker Nutrient and
Health Claims U.S. Regulatory Guide" that was cooperatively
developed by Food Consulting Company and Silliker, Inc., a
leading provider of laboratory nutrition analysis.

Part 4 of the series.

The Guide includes a
user-friendly chart with the FDA definitions for "free" and
"low" as it relates to calories, total fat, saturated fat,
cholesterol and sodium. |
If you missed
earlier parts of the series you can view and download them
now. (Get
Part 1,
Part 2 or
Part 3.) The pages from all parts
will add up to the complete booklet. |
Q. |
If you sell foodservice products to restaurants by the
case, are you required to label each 'package', 'packet'
or 'bottle' in the case?
− H.S., Beverage Company, Canada |
A. |
No, you are not required
to label the individual units within the case. The required labeling
for foodservice items can be on either the individual
units or on the shipping container; it does not have
to be in both places.
