***Compliance Dates Set for Food Labeling
Requirements***
FDA established January 1, 2004, as the uniform
compliance
date for food labeling regulations that are issued

Author's Note: FDA is expected to change Daily
Values for
several nutrients based on the updated Dietary
Reference
Intake (DRI) reports. New Daily Values are likely
to be
published before 12/31/02; therefore, manufacturers
would
be required to have compliant labels by January 1,
2004.
***FDA Updates Strategy for Implementing Dietary
Supplement
Label Claims***
In Pearson v. Shalala, the court ruled that FDA
violates First
amendment rights when it prevents the use of health
claims in
labeling on the basis that a claim fails to meet the
"significant
scientific agreement." See five related documents:

***Canada to Fashion Labeling Program After US***
The Canadian Government announced its intent to
adopt
mandatory nutrition labeling fashioned from US
regulations by
mid-2001. Trans fats will likely be included. A
two-year
implementation period is expected. Exemptions might
include
small business, restaurants and food service, foods
packaged
at retail, and fresh fruits and vegetables.

FYI TIP: FDA is likely to increase the Daily Value
for calcium,
vitamin C, and several voluntary nutrients. The
National
Academy of Science has 4 of 7 DRI reports yet to be
released;
these reports might impact Daily Values for other
nutrients
required on the Nutrition Facts panel.
